The foot is the first thing to make contact with the ground with any weight bearing activities (such as running, walking, squatting). The foot therefore has to absorb the reaction force from the ground into the body.
As a result, if there is any abnormal foot biomechanics this can create excessive force throughout the body. This typically causes pain around the foot, knee, hip and lower back.
At Jon W Sports Injury, we place considerably importance on the analysis of foot biomechanics if it is believed this could be a contributing factor.
We complete a foot assessment and analyse the biomechanics. We can also supply corrective orthotics if we believe suitable.
Kinesiology Taping (KT) is the latest form of taping and one that has attracted a lot of attention due to its often brightly coloured appearance.
At Jon W Sports Injury, we are firm believers in the use of KT. While we strongly believe that no athlete should become reliant on taping or supports we also find that KT has a very effective place in rehabilitation and a return to sport.
The improvements of kinesiology tape are multiple and the tape can often last several days providing benefit throughout the day.
The KT will assist with the body’s natural healing process by lifting the skin. This allows the drainage of inflammation to occur at an increased rate.
The KT will also provide increased elasticity to muscles that may be tight due to injury. These will allow the joint to work with full range of motion while placing less stress on the injured tissue.
KT can be applied to all parts of the body to provide benefit.
Following initial treatment, you will undergo a series of rehabilitation exercises.
These will begin with simple exercises and progress to harder, more strenuous exercises to ensure full recovery and strengthening. You will be provided with exercises, with progressions that can be performed at home.

The vast majority of rehabilitation treatments will include sports massage. Sports massage is something that should be included in the life of an athlete, whether injured or not. It has both physical and psychological effects for the individual.
Massage will increase blood flow, providing injured areas with important nutrients and substances required for healing. It will increase tissue permeability and provide a passive stretch of tight tissue increasing elasticity. Effective massage strokes can break down scar tissue, speeding recovery and reducing pain.
While providing many physical benefits, massage will also have a relaxation effect through heat generation, improved circulation and passive stretching. It will reduce anxiety through the release of endorphins.
Sports massage can be used before or after competition with different purposes. The appropriate technique can have either a stimulating or relaxing effect on muscle tissue.
We use the techniques of effleurage, petrissage, tapotement and friction as part of his treatments.
Jon W Sports Injury therapists use trigger point therapy in their treatments.
Trigger point therapy is a hands-on technique that involves applying pressure to a tender area of muscle or a ‘trigger point’.
Trigger points are areas of tenderness that cause pain. This pain may be local or referred. For example pain in the Achilles tendon may be caused by trigger points in the calf muscle.
Trigger points can be caused by overexertion, trauma and poor posture.
Elimination of trigger points will remove pain, increase range of motion, circulation and co-ordination.
Ultrasound is a treatment that uses a specialised machine to send sound waves at a high frequency into the body.
Ultrasound is widely recognised as the best practical treatment to speed the healing process.
The sound waves cause soft tissue structures to relax and increase blood flow.
The increased blood flow can provide more oxygen, nutrients and remove waste.
This removes inflammation, scar tissue and ultimately pain.
Ultrasound is a pain-free treatment.
